Cambodia Helicopter Tour — Angkor from Above

April 28, 2026 · 8 min read · FFGR Cambodia VIP Team

The scale of Angkor is impossible to comprehend from the ground. The nine-kilometre moat that encircles Angkor Wat, the 100-kilometre hydraulic network that fed a medieval city of one million, the temple mountain profiles that only read correctly at altitude — these are things that require elevation to understand. FFGR Cambodia's helicopter program provides exactly this elevation, combined with the ground logistics that make the aerial perspective meaningful rather than merely scenic.

The Angkor Aerial Circuit

The standard Angkor helicopter tour departs from the Siem Reap aerodrome on a 45-minute circuit covering Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom and the Bayon, the Baphuon, the Royal Enclosure, and the eastern hydraulic barays. At the correct altitude — approximately 300 metres above the canopy — the geometry of the Angkor hydraulic system becomes legible: the West Baray reservoir, twelve kilometres long, and the network of channels that maintained the water supply for a city that disappeared before modern infrastructure existed.

Our pilot provides a live narration in English or French from an archaeologically accurate script prepared in consultation with the EFEO. The circuit can be extended to include Preah Khan, Neak Pean, and the Ta Som water temple for clients with more time. A dedicated sunrise circuit is available, departing at 05:15 for the light conditions that illuminate the temple profiles most dramatically.

Private Charter vs. Shared Flight

FFGR Cambodia operates exclusively on private charter — your aircraft, your departure time, your routing. There are no shared circuits, no waiting for other passengers, no compromise on itinerary. For families of two to four, the cost differential between shared and private is smaller than it appears; for a group of six, private charter is almost always more economical.

We operate with a Eurocopter AS350 for two to three passengers and an Airbus H145 for groups of five to six. Both aircraft are maintained to IATA standards and operated by pilots with a minimum of 3,000 hours on type. Safety briefings are given before boarding; all passengers receive noise-cancelling headsets with intercom.

Beyond Angkor — National Circuit Flights

The Cambodian landscape is extraordinary from the air in ways that do not translate to road travel. The Cardamom Mountains — one of Southeast Asia's last intact rainforest biomes — are accessible only by helicopter for clients without days available for jungle trekking. The Irrawaddy dolphin pools at Kampi on the Mekong can be reached from Phnom Penh in 40 minutes by helicopter versus 3.5 hours by road.

Our national circuit routes include: Phnom Penh to Koh Rong (30 minutes, bypassing the four-hour road and ferry); Siem Reap to Preah Vihear border temple (45 minutes direct versus 4 hours road); and the full-day Cardamom traverse, combining aerial survey with a ground programme at the Tatai River wilderness camp.

Ground-to-Air Integration

The helicopter is one element of a FFGR Cambodia programme, not a standalone offering. Every aerial circuit is preceded by a ground orientation — delivered in the vehicle on the way to the aerodrome — that provides the geographic and historical context for what you will see from the air. Without this orientation, aerial temple viewing risks becoming pattern recognition without meaning.

After the flight, the ground programme continues. For Angkor circuits, this typically means returning by vehicle to the temple most compelling from the air — often the Bayon, whose face towers only reveal their scale once you have seen the full composition from altitude — for a ground-level visit with a guide who can show what the aerial view disclosed.

Photography & Equipment

The helicopter is configured for photography. The doors can be removed for clients with professional equipment (arranged in advance; mandatory harness protocol). For standard photography, the large forward-facing windows on the H145 provide a clear angle without reflection. Our pilot is trained to hold position over the most photographically significant viewpoints for as long as the client requires, within the safety parameters of the aviation authority.

For professional film and photography productions, we coordinate with the Civil Aviation Authority of Cambodia for necessary overflight permits and provide a production coordinator who manages the interface between the aviation team and the creative team.

Booking & Weather Considerations

Helicopter tours require 48-hour advance booking. The optimal flying season in Cambodia is November to April (dry season), when visibility is maximal and convective cloud formations are minimal. During the wet season (May to October), morning flights before 10:00 typically offer clear conditions; afternoon flights are weather-dependent and may be cancelled or rescheduled on the day.

FFGR Cambodia monitors weather conditions from the morning of the flight and provides a go/no-go decision by 07:00. If a flight is cancelled due to weather, we offer a full reschedule at no cost, or a complete refund. Contact our aviation desk via WhatsApp to begin the booking process.
