Sihanoukville & Koh Rong VIP — Island Access & Private Boat

April 28, 2026 · 8 min read · FFGR Cambodia VIP Team

The Gulf of Thailand coastline of Cambodia remains, by the standards of Southeast Asia, genuinely undiscovered — not as a destination for the budget traveller, which it has been, but as a destination for the UHNW visitor who requires privacy, marine depth, and an island that has not yet been fully commodified. Koh Rong and Koh Rong Samloem represent this opportunity. FFGR Cambodia handles the ground transfer from Phnom Penh, the private boat crossing, and the resort coordination at the island level.

Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville — The Road or the Air

The National Highway 4 from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville is four hours by road in a private vehicle — a comfortable drive through the Cardamom foothills in a Mercedes GLE with a well-stocked cabin. For clients with less time, the domestic flight on Cambodia Angkor Air (45 minutes, multiple daily departures) connects to a ground transfer at Sihanoukville airport in five minutes. We coordinate both.

The road option has specific advantages: stops at the Kirirom highland national park viewpoint, lunch at the Kampot pepper farmhouse restaurant, and an arrival in Sihanoukville in time for the late-afternoon boat crossing, which offers the best light conditions on the open water. The flight option prioritises time over experience; the choice is yours.

The Private Boat Crossing

The public ferry to Koh Rong takes 45 minutes and carries 150 passengers. Our private speedboat crossing takes 25 minutes and carries your party only. Departure is at the time you specify, from a private pier arrangement that avoids the Sihanoukville ferry terminal entirely. The boat is a 36-foot centre-console with a shaded passenger cockpit, marine-grade GPS, VHF radio, and a cooler stocked with your requested refreshments.

For groups requiring additional discretion — arrivals avoiding commercial ports — we coordinate with the Cambodian maritime authority for alternative landing points on Koh Rong's west coast. The island has seventeen kilometres of navigable coastline; not all of it has a public beach.

Koh Rong — Resort Selection & Island Logistics

Koh Rong's luxury accommodation is concentrated on Long Beach (Song Saa Private Island) and the southern Koh Touch area. Song Saa is the benchmark property — overwater bungalows, a conservation marine reserve, and an arrival procedure that involves your private boat docking at the resort jetty while a cold towel and introductory cocktail are prepared on the dock. We coordinate the resort jetty arrival to align with your boat departure from Sihanoukville.

For clients preferring the smaller and less-developed Koh Rong Samloem — where the M'Pai Bay area offers a calmer marine environment and less boat traffic — we manage the additional crossing and the accommodation coordination with the Lazy Beach or Saracen Bay resort properties.

Marine Activities — Private Charter on the Water

The Gulf of Thailand waters around Koh Rong offer snorkelling on unspoiled reef, bioluminescent plankton kayaking after dark, sport fishing on the outer reef, and open-water diving at the sites managed by the Koh Rong Marine Conservation Zone. FFGR Cambodia arranges private marine charters for all of these, with equipment and certified guides included.

For clients with their own yacht arriving from Thailand or Vietnam, we coordinate the marina arrival at Sihanoukville's Ochheuteal or the new Kampot marina, and manage the ground transfer from the dock to the hotel or resort. Our maritime contacts in the Gulf of Thailand network cover the corridor from Ko Samui to Phu Quoc.

Security & Privacy at Sea

Island access presents specific privacy considerations that land-based travel does not. The boat crossing is visible; your arrival at a resort jetty is noted by staff. For ultra-high-profile clients — sovereign family members, entertainment figures with significant public profiles — we coordinate with Song Saa or Koh Rong Samloem resort management to arrange alternative arrival procedures: late evening crossings, private jetty arrivals outside of staff shift changes, and cabin preparation that minimises foot traffic in the accommodation zone.

FFGR Cambodia does not disclose client names or itineraries to any third party, including resort management, without explicit written authorisation. This protocol applies equally to land-based and maritime operations.

Booking the Sihanoukville & Koh Rong Programme

A complete Phnom Penh to Koh Rong programme — ground transfer, private boat crossing, resort coordination, and optional marine activities — requires a minimum of 48 hours advance booking. Same-day arrangements for the boat crossing alone can be managed with four hours notice via WhatsApp.

Multi-day island stays with full FFGR Cambodia support — including daily marine activities, excursions to the Cambodian mainland coast, and a managed return transfer to Phnom Penh or Siem Reap — are assembled as bespoke programmes. Contact our concierge team to begin the itinerary design.
